Workshop
Student welding in the workshop
6361 University Boulevard, Dorothy Somerset Studio, Room 106
The AHVA workshop provides support for a broad range of student and faculty projects, housing capabilities for woodworking, canvas stretcher construction, welding, metal and plastics machining, and mold-making and casting.
Stationary woodworking equipment includes table saws, compound mitre (chop) saws, band saws, a scroll saw, a jointer, a planer, stationary sanders, drill presses, and a wood lathe.
In the metal shop, students can take advantage of oxy-fuel welding and brazing, and various arc welding processes. The shop is also outfitted with a spot welder, plasma cutter, drill press with milling console, machine lathe, metal band saw, grinding and buffing equipment, a combination shear, brake and roller, a universal bender, and a bead blast cabinet. The workshop also possesses a vacuum chamber for casting processes, a kiln, and numerous hand, compressed air, and power tools.
Students receive instruction in the safe and effective use of equipment and processes through their coursework and a system of workshop demonstrations and orientations. During normal access hours, a technician supervises the safe use of tools and equipment, and provides technical support and consultation. During extended hours, students who have completed an extended hours access orientation may use hand tools and a limited array of stationary power equipment under the supervision of workshop monitors.
A wide variety of tools are available in the workshop, but due to availability, students must provide their own safety supplies and a few basic hand tools. Please find a full list of these items, as well as appropriate clothing and footwear requirements at http://ahva.ubc.ca/Forms/45_061010_020512.pdf.
