Undergraduate Programs
Diploma in Art History
The Diploma program is designed for applicants who have already completed a first degree in another discipline. Applications for admission should be made to Enrolment Services no later than, and preferably before, August 1 for entry into September classes. The Diploma gives students an opportunity to pursue studies in Art History and visual culture, and provides a means to continue on to graduate work in Art History or a related field, such a Critical and Curatorial Studies.
The Diploma program requires 30 credits of art history courses numbered 300 or above. No more than six credits of cross listed courses offered by other departments, except ARTH 329, may be counted toward the requirements. Only six credits from courses with a 'C' standing may be credited toward the diploma requirements.
The basic requirements for a Diploma in ARTH are as follows:
- ARTH 300 (3) Seminar in Theory and Approaches to Art History
- 15 credits in Art History courses numbered 300 or above in one of the following three areas: Western art and architecture, Indigenous arts of the Americas, or Asian art.
- 3 credits in Art History courses numbered 300 or above in each of the two areas not selected for concentration.
- 3 credits in a 400 level Art History seminar.
It is important to consult with a departmental advisor to ensure a coherent pattern of courses in both the area chosen and in complementary electives. In some cases, interdisciplinary groupings have been established to assist students with special interests - for example in Medieval Studies, Asian Studies, Canadian Studies and Latin American Studies.
Referred to as the ‘area of concentration,’ the Department offers ARTH courses in three loosely grouped principal areas of emphasis:
Courses in Western Art: ARTH 329, 330, 331, 332 333, 334, 335, 336, 337, 338, 339, 340, 341, 342, 343, 344, 346, 347, 348, 349, 429, 432, 433, 436, 439, 440, 442, 443, 445, 448
Courses in Asian Art: ARTH 327, 351, 352, 353, 354, 355, 358, 359, 360, 361, 364, 365, 366, 367, 455, 458, 464
Courses in Indigenous Art of the Americas: ARTH 370, 371, 372, 373, 376, 377, 471, 476
NOTE: The Diploma in Art History is close to being an equivalent of a BA major in Art History from UBC.
