Introduction to Art History Undergraduate Programs
The Department of Art History, Visual Art and Theory offers a range of undergraduate Art History courses and programs that expose students to the breadth of the field. Students can explore its histories, and its contemporary diversity, and engage in intensive concentration in selected areas. In today’s rapidly evolving digital world, visual culture is becoming ever more crucial.
A dynamic student experience is enriched by lectures, presentations and seminars from visiting scholars and artists, and by exhibitions, both on and off campus. The Art History Students’ Association offers students unique ways to connect with others and the wider community. The annual Art History Undergraduate Symposium, now entering its ninth year, provides an invaluable student-driven component of the program, where students organize the event and submit their work for review by a committee of their peers, in an environment that is both supportive and challenging.
Many fields connect and inform art historical study, and Art History students can find a wide variety of courses in other Departments across the Faculty of Arts with which to complement their own concentration. Interdisciplinary groupings have been established to facilitate the selection process - including Medieval Studies, Asian Studies, Canadian Studies and Latin American Studies. It is, however, always important to consult with a departmental advisor to ensure a coherent pattern of courses in both the area chosen and in complementary electives.
Major and Honours students contemplating further university education are advised that a reading knowledge of a language other than English, appropriate to their interests, is likely to be required in their graduate studies. Such students are strongly advised to take the necessary language courses as electives. An orientation meeting for third and fourth year Art History students is held every fall to inform them about the MA and PhD programs at UBC, application procedures, and language and course requirements.
